1 dead, another injured in Ballantyne, MEDIC says

Minch was impaired at the time of the crash, said CMPD.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte EMS said one person is dead and another is being treated for life-threatening injuries following an incident in Ballantyne.

MEDIC confirmed around 4:45 p.m. Saturday 38-year-old Gustavo Leobardo Lopez-Cuarez was pronounced dead following a fatal accident along Johnson Road near Earth Fare.  

Another person was taken to Atrium CMC and is being treated for life-threatening injuries, according to MEDIC.

Officers located a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris and a silver 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer with heavy damage. After investigating, it was determined that the Chevrolet was traveling north in the northbound direction of travel on Johnston Rd. at a high rate speed. 

The driver, Ryan Thomas Minch, lost control of the vehicle and it went over the median and struck Lopez-Curaez’s vehicle that was traveling in the southbound lanes of Johnston Rd. The Chevrolet struck the Toyota head-on. 

Minch was impaired at the time of the crash, said CMPD. Minch has been charged with felony death by vehicle, DWI, reckless driving, and open container of alcoholic beverage.
